Building companies

Build. Own. Compound. — The Operating Philosophy Behind NUVO

Building companies creates opportunity. Owning them creates alignment. Compounding what they produce creates long-term value.

For much of our first decade, the easiest way to describe NUVO was as a group of entrepreneurs building businesses.

That description was true.

It was also incomplete.

We started companies. We partnered with founders. We entered new markets. We built operating teams. We closed businesses that did not work. We merged capabilities where that created a stronger outcome. We exited businesses when the timing was right.

Over time, a more important lesson emerged.

Building a business and building enduring wealth are not exactly the same thing.

A founder can create tremendous enterprise value and still fail to retain enough exposure to that value. A business can grow rapidly and still produce little recurring cash for its owners. An entrepreneur can spend years building company after company while continually starting again from zero.

We do not want NUVO's next decade to work like that.

That thinking sits behind three words:

Build. Own. Compound.

Build

Building remains fundamental to who we are.

We like opportunities that require more than passive capital.

They may need a commercial model to be created, the right people to be assembled, systems to be designed, customers to be found or partnerships to be structured.

Sometimes we will start the company ourselves.

Sometimes the better opportunity will already exist and NUVO can invest, acquire or partner.

The principle is the same: contribute more than money.

Own

Ownership changes behaviour.

When you intend to own something for the long term, the questions change.

Is the business building recurring value?

Can it operate beyond its founders?

Does it have strong governance?

Are the incentives aligned?

Can customers trust it?

Are we creating something another generation of leadership can continue building?

Ownership does not mean NUVO must own everything.

In fact, one lesson from our first decade is that the right partner can create more value than maximum ownership.

We are comfortable bringing in founder/operators, strategic investors, industry specialists and capital partners where the alignment is better.

What matters is retaining meaningful exposure to the value we help create.

Compound

Compounding is where the NUVO model changes most.

Every successful business creates more than financial return.

It creates knowledge.

Relationships.

Systems.

Reputation.

Market access.

People.

Capital.

The question is whether those assets disappear into individual businesses or strengthen the platform that created them.

Our intention is increasingly to make NUVO itself stronger every time a company succeeds.

Capital can be reinvested.

Technology can be reused.

Relationships can accelerate another opportunity.

Mistakes made once do not need to be made again.

Operating capability can move across the portfolio.

This turns a collection of businesses into a flywheel.

The first decade of NUVO taught us that we can build.

The next is about becoming more deliberate about what we build, what we retain, who we partner with and where we deploy capital.

That is what Build. Own. Compound. means to us.

It is not a tagline.

It is the operating philosophy for the next chapter.
