The Next Chapter: From Building Companies to Compounding Ownership

NUVO has spent more than a decade proving it can build businesses. The next phase is about becoming more deliberate about what we retain, own and compound.

NUVO began in 2015 as an entrepreneurial decision.

Build something better.

Serve clients differently.

Create opportunity.

Over the decade that followed, that decision became a portfolio of companies, partnerships and investments operating across multiple sectors and 34 African countries.

That first phase answered an important question:

Can we build?

We believe the answer is yes.

The more important question for the next phase is:

What should we keep?

That question changes the strategy.

Fewer businesses. Greater intention.

Entrepreneurs can easily become collectors of opportunities.

Every interesting market becomes another company.

Every customer problem suggests another product.

Every relationship opens another door.

Opportunity is not the scarce resource.

Focus is.

NUVO's next phase is not about maximising the number of companies associated with the group.

It is about creating a portfolio where every significant business has a reason to exist.

Some should produce recurring cash.

Some should create long-duration asset value.

Some should offer significant growth upside.

Some will be experiments.

Some may eventually be sold.

What matters is knowing which is which.

Building is only part of the model

The next NUVO will continue starting businesses.

But we also want to acquire and invest in established companies where we believe NUVO can materially strengthen the opportunity.

That might mean:

providing growth capital;

bringing in an operator;

creating better systems;

helping with commercialisation;

opening market access;

structuring a strategic partnership;

or supporting a founder who wants partial liquidity without walking away from what they have built.

We do not believe every opportunity needs to start at zero.

Sometimes the most intelligent form of entrepreneurship is helping an existing business become significantly better.

Partnership over control

This also means becoming comfortable with different ownership structures.

NUVO does not need to control every business.

We are prepared to work alongside founder/operators, strategic companies, investors, domain specialists and capital partners.

Where someone else is better positioned to create a particular part of the value, they should probably be around the table.

The objective is not maximum control.

It is maximum alignment around building a stronger business.

Ownership must create compounding

The biggest shift is what happens after value is created.

Historically, entrepreneurs often move from one venture to the next.

The first business funds the second.

The second consumes the returns from the first.

Success creates another beginning.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that.

But it does not necessarily create compounding.

NUVO increasingly wants the returns, capabilities and relationships created by one business to strengthen the entire platform.

Cash flow can become investment capital.

Systems can be reused.

Leadership can move across the portfolio.

Relationships can create distribution.

Lessons can reduce the cost of the next mistake.

That is what we mean by compound.

The portfolio is starting to reflect this

Nuvo Consulting reflects operating capability.

Nishati reflects long-duration asset ownership.

Crunch Carbon reflects scalable platform economics.

Nuvo Energy reflects more than a decade of energy-market capability.

INC Africa demonstrates partnership.

Ant Trails represents another operating business.

Grid Supply Africa and Gridly represent emerging opportunities.

The portfolio will continue changing.

It should.

The point is not preserving every company forever.

The point is creating enduring value across the system.

The first decade taught us how to build.

The next is about being far more deliberate about what we own, who we build with and how the value we create compounds.

That is NUVO's next chapter.
